Firearms Application Process & Requirements

Step 1:

To begin the online NJSP Firearms Application and Registration System (F.A.R.S.) you will need to click here

NOTE: Before applying, ensure that you are a TOWN OF BOONTON resident! There are some addresses within the surrounding towns that utilize a Boonton mailing address and zip code (07005). If you are unsure, your best bet is to ask yourself, to whom do you pay your property taxes?

Please ensure that the Town of Boonton ORI number is correct on the form and all information provided. If an incorrect ORI number is entered on the form, you will NOT receive a firearms ID card or a permit to purchase. You will then have to re-apply using the correct ORI Number and pay for the process again. A refund cannot be issued.

Step 2:

Complete the online application. You may complete the application using a smartphone, mobile device, or computer.

***Caution: it is a Crime of the Third Degree, punishable by incarceration of up to Five (5) Years and a $15,000 Fine, to give or cause to be given false information, or to sign a fictitious name or address, while applying for a firearms purchaser identification card, permit to purchase a handgun, permit to carry a handgun, permit to possess a machine gun, or permit to possess an assault rifle.*** N.J.S. 2C:39-10c

When completing the application, you will need the e-mail addresses of two (2) reputable references. Your references can be family members. Please fully proofread the entered information at the "Review Screen" portion of your application. Please also print out the confirmation pages for your records. You will receive automated e-mail updates throughout this new process through FARS.

When deciding how many permits you would like to get, remember:
a. One (1) permit is required for each handgun you wish to purchase (each permit is $2)
b. You can only purchase one (1) handgun in a 30 day period
c. Permits are good for up to 90 days from the date of issue, and if not executed, and can be renewed for an addition 90 days

Step 3:

If you have never been fingerprinted before for firearms purposes, you will need to go for fingerprinting with the Universal Fingerprint form that will be generated after successful submission of this form.

However, if you have been fingerprinted before for firearm purposes, upon completion of this form and payment, you would have completed both the S.T.S 033 and 212A requirements. We do not provide fingerprinting services at the Town of Boonton Police Dept. for firearms purposes.

Step 4:

Email proof of employment to Firearms@BoontonPolice.org
You may redact financial information; you must only prove that you are gainfully employed.

Step 5:

WAIT!!! Your fingerprint results will be transmitted from the State Police to the Boonton Police. At this point your background investigation will begin and may take some time. If we have any questions pertaining to you application, we may reach out to you via phone or email.

Step 6:

If your application is approved, we will call you to schedule an appointment to pick up your FID Card. DO NOT SHOW UP OR CALL if you receive an e-mail advising that your application is approved, wait to be contacted. You will need to bring photo ID and payment at the time of pickup. Payment for your Firearms Identification Card and Pistol Permit(s) whichever you have selected will be collected at the time of pick up. Please see below for more information regarding fees.

FEES:

$5 for the Firearms Identification Card
This one time fee is payable to the Town of Boonton Police Department and may be either a check or money order. The ID card is good for as long as you remain eligible to own a firearm in the State of New Jersey and reside at the same address.

$2 for each handgun permit
You will need one permit for each handgun you wish to purchase.

Note: Check or Money Order is preferred, as we can only accept payment in Cash during normal business hours of the Town of Boonton (8:30 AM-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding Closure for Holidays or other reasons). Please make payment out to the Town of Boonton.

*Notify your references that the F.A.R.S. system will email them the reference questions to be answered. Your references will be able to complete the questions using a smartphone/tablet or computer. Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.

*The online application is applicant driven. Please ensure that you have entered the best phone numbers and e-mail addresses for yourself and your references. Although your Social Security number is not mandatory, the application process will be delayed without it.

*If you have resided outside of NJ in the past 10 years, you must complete Form 66, Consent for Mental Health Records Search.

To utilize this form, you will need the freely available
Adobe Reader software installed on your computer, version 7 or higher. This is a “fillable form” which may be filled out on your computer and saved to your hard drive and/or printed out. Once the completed form is saved to your hard drive, you can then use your e-mail account to attach the form to an e-mail and submit it electronically to Firearms@BoontonPolice.org
